Fresh & Fluffy Burger Buns

Fresh & Fluffy Burger Buns
  • All-purpose flour: 570g, forms the base structure of our buns
  • Fresh yeast: 25g, essential for perfect rise and texture
  • Olive oil: 100ml, adds moisture and richness
  • Salt: 1½ tbsp, enhances overall flavor
  • Sugar: 1 tbsp, feeds the yeast and adds subtle sweetness
  • Lukewarm water: 350-380ml, activates the yeast
  • Sesame seeds: 2-3 tbsp, adds delightful crunch and nutty flavor

Step-by-Step Baking Guide

  1. Prepare the base: Create a well in your flour, add salt, sugar, and olive oil in the center
  2. Activate yeast: Dissolve yeast in ½ cup warm water until smooth
  3. Mix and knead: Combine everything, gradually adding water until you achieve a soft, smooth dough
  4. First rise: Let dough rest in a warm spot for 1-2 hours until doubled
  5. Shape and prep: Divide into 6-7 portions, shape into balls, flatten slightly, and top with sesame seeds
  6. Bake to perfection: In a preheated 180°C oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown

Kneading and Rising Tips

When kneading your dough, look for a soft, bouncy texture that springs back when you poke it gently. The dough should feel smooth and not stick to your hands.

A little trick: if you’re new to bread making, try the “windowpane test” – stretch a small piece of dough between your fingers.

If it stretches thin enough to see light through without breaking, you’ve kneaded it just right!

For the perfect rise, pop your dough in a warm spot like near (not on) a sunny window or inside your oven with just the light on.

Variations and Mix-ins

Make these buns your own! Try sprinkling different toppings like poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, or dried onion flakes before baking.

For whole wheat buns, swap 1/3 of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. Want softer buns?

Brush them with melted butter right after they come out of the oven. For extra flavor, add 1 tablespoon of dried herbs like rosemary or oregano to the dough.

Storage and Reheating

These buns stay fresh at room temperature for 2-3 days when stored in a paper bag or bread box.

For longer storage, pop them in the freezer for up to 3 months in a freezer bag. To refresh slightly stale buns, sprinkle them with a few drops of water and warm them in the oven at 350°F for 5 minutes. They’ll taste almost like fresh-baked!

Serving Ideas

These fluffy buns are perfect for classic beef burgers, but don’t stop there! Try them with grilled portobello mushrooms, pulled jackfruit, or falafel patties.

Split and toast them lightly for extra crunch. They also make amazing sandwich rolls for cold cuts or your favorite deli fillings.

My favorite way? Slice one open while it’s still warm, add a pat of butter, and enjoy it just like that!
